Cristalino Foundation

Location – Alta Floresta, the Southern Amazon, Brazil

The Project – The Cristalino Ecological Foundation (FEC) was founded in 1999 and is situated in the municipality of Alta Floresta, in the southern section of the Brazilian Amazon. The project has many objectives, including the protection of natural areas, social communication, education on conservation, scientific research and encouragement to develop a green economy in the area.

‘A Day in the Forest’ is one of FEC’s projects and was established in 2008 to serve the schools within the municipality and the wider area. ADITF is a workshop which currently takes place once a week during term time, receiving approximately 30 children and teachers at a time. The workshops include breakfast, lunch and fruit for the children, as well as activities including nature trails and dynamic activities based around the flora and fauna of the ecosystem. The objective is to develop the children’s awareness of the forest and the importance of preservation and conservation.

Our support – Through the support of the LATA Foundation, the Cristalino Foundation aim to increase the number of workshops to two per week, doubling the number of children and teachers who are able to attend, increasing from 750 to 1,500 each year.

Further information – The LATA Foundation also donated four camera traps to the Cristalino Foundation at the end of 2019. The traps are currently being used to monitor the healthy and biodiversity of the rainforest and used by the scientists working with FEC.
