Community Baboon Sanctuary – Belize

Empowering Women Through Sustainable Tourism

Location: Bermudian Landing, Belize

The Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) is a groundbreaking, community-led conservation area protecting the endangered black howler monkey, locally known as the ‘baboon’.

Since 1998, the CBS Women’s Conservation Group (CBSWCG), made up of elected female leaders from eight villages, has led efforts to protect biodiversity while creating economic opportunities through sustainable tourism

The Project

With LATA Foundation support, CBSWCG will build an immersive Creole Folklore Nature Trail within the grounds of their Sanctuary. It will be designed to showcase and celebrate the diverse Creole culture by bringing Belizean folkore to life, through statues of folklore characters designed by local artisans, and with tales from Creole folklore narrated by village elders.

The goal will be to further the interest in the CBS by offering a cultural experience alongside its already-incredible wildlife experience, and to protect Creole heritage for generations to come.

Project Components

  • Construction of 12 replica sheds and interpretive signage
  • Storyboards and QR codes for interactive experiences
  • Community training for guides and cultural performers
  • Trail maintenance and visitor management

Project Aims

  • Preserve Creole folklore and cultural heritage
  • Generate sustainable local income
  • Promote conservation through education and engagement
  • Enhance visitor experiences in a recognised ecotourism site linking conservation with community-led tourism.

Expected Outcomes

  • A fully established Creole Folklore Nature Trail attracting local and international visitors.
  • Women, youth, and artisans engaged and earning income in art, guiding, and storytelling.
  • Visitor engagement in Creole heritage and oral traditions
  • Increased awareness of CBS biodiversity and heritage

Why we are supporting this project – This women-led initiative links tourism, conservation, and heritage, offering long-term economic and cultural benefits to the community while strengthening sustainable visitor experiences.
