AMA Torres del Paine is a non-profit environmental group that supports and finances projects to conserve the natural environment of the majestic Torres del Paine National Park. The organisation contributes to various conservation projects, scientific research, and environmental education initiatives every year, all aimed at preserving the unique natural and cultural resources of Torres del Paine.
The funds from the LATA Foundation will support the conservation and restoration of the national park, including the building of new trails and reconstruction of existing trails. This will help reduce soil erosion and minimise the effect of rainfall.
Creating well-designed routes can prevent biodiversity loss and reduce other negative impacts associated with tourism. In addition, it is anticipated the project will contribute to the economic well-being of local communities by promoting responsible tourism that respects natural resources.
Project update:
The reconstruction of the Base Torres trail began with a national awareness campaign in 2017, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trails in national parks, particularly in Torres del Paine.
The principles of sustainable trail creation focus on properly delineating transit areas to ensure tourists’ footsteps do not erode soils in areas not designated for circulation.
The trail’s design is carefully crafted to prevent rainwater from pooling within it, avoiding the formation of small streams. Its structure allows water to flow off to the sides, reducing damage caused by water accumulation.
Moreover, the trail slopes are designed to minimize accelerated deterioration. By reducing the steepness of inclines, foot traffic exerts less pressure on the soil.
Reinforcements in certain sections include layers of rocks secured within containment meshes, which enhance consistency and durability.
Construction began in 2022 and is expected to conclude by the summer of 2026.
Organizations Involved:
Key organizations involved in this project include Las Torres Patagonia, AMA Torres del Paine NGO, ConservationVIP, Legacy Fund, and the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF). Recently, the LATA Foundation joined the initiative, providing a grant to purchase tools and equipment.
Progress Overview:
- Completed Distance: 8 kilometers
- Remaining Distance: 0.5 kilometers
- Pending Infrastructure: Two bridges to cross the Ascencio River
The project is 94% complete within the Las Torres Patagonia Reserve. However, the final stage presents a significant challenge: constructing two bridges at an estimated cost exceeding 1 billion CLP. Las Torres Patagonia is actively exploring funding and execution alternatives to overcome this hurdle.
Our continued focus is to complete this ambitious plan, delivering a sustainable trail within Torres del Paine National Park for the enjoyment of all tourists visiting the iconic granite towers that define the park’s name.
